Why We Don't Rely Solely on Traditional Puppy Temperament Testing
At El Silencio Standard Poodles, we believe that understanding a puppy's temperament involves much more than a single test performed at seven or eight weeks of age.
Our puppies are raised with intentional early socialization, enrichment, confidence-building activities, problem-solving opportunities, and positive exposure to everyday experiences.
Programs such as Puppy Culture and Baxter & Bella help puppies develop valuable skills before they ever reach the age when traditional temperament testing is typically performed.
Here's why that matters.
Many traditional tests evaluate how a puppy reacts to unfamiliar situations, sounds, objects, people, and handling. However, puppies that have already been exposed to these experiences may respond differently because they have learned confidence, trust, and coping skills.
A naturally cautious puppy may appear quite confident because of its early experiences, while a naturally bold puppy may demonstrate similar behavior.
This doesn't mean the puppies are hiding their true personalities. It means their early development has already influenced how they respond to the world!
Additionally, research has shown that a single temperament test performed at a young age has limited ability to predict a dog's adult personality.
That's why we believe ongoing observation is more valuable than relying on one test alone.
By living with our puppies from birth, watching their daily interactions, observing how they approach new challenges, and seeing how they develop over time, we gain a much more complete picture of each puppy's individual personality.
Our goal isn't simply to produce puppies that perform well on a temperament test.
Our goal is to raise confident, adaptable, well-adjusted puppies and help match each one with a family where they can thrive.
